Amazing book! A wonderful guide for new parents and a great resource for life raising children。 If you want a biblical guide to bringing up children from birth to adulthood, this book is an excellent resource。

I’d recommend this book to any parent。 Tripp lays out the biblical reasons why parents need to shepherd their children’s heart as well as practically shows how to do it。

So good! I learned so much and have changed how I approach discipline。 Great insight on how to correct your child in a way that helps them recognize their need for Christ

Great book。 Quite practical advice for all ages, including younger ones。 Most of the books I had been reading lately were more theoretical/principles, so when this one started out that way I actually put it down for a while as I wasn’t at the older age of child rearing yet and thought it would be more on that。 But when coming back to it, I found it had sections for age—including a chapter on infant to kids age, with a good combination of principle and practice。Some may have issues with it as he Great book。 Quite practical advice for all ages, including younger ones。 Most of the books I had been reading lately were more theoretical/principles, so when this one started out that way I actually put it down for a while as I wasn’t at the older age of child rearing yet and thought it would be more on that。 But when coming back to it, I found it had sections for age—including a chapter on infant to kids age, with a good combination of principle and practice。Some may have issues with it as he seems pretty strict that the one interpretation of the rod in Proverbs is spanking, and I think that’s too far。 But as for my personal upbringing, I was raised basically following these principles and really appreciate my parents for it—and plan to use most of them with our children。 I think for a young age, it’s hard to beat the practicality of this method in that focuses on God and not the parents, show’s love, and yet in a short time creates humility and repentance in order for the kid to learn lessons and learn submission to authority。 。。。more

This was recommended to me by my pastor at Grace City church of Wilmington, NC。 And I quote, “I think this will serve you, you are in the thick of it”。 This book has helped me see that God can be known in the charge he has given me to shepherd my children。 As a parent of four currently under the age of 10, I am learning deeper through this book that God gives what He commands。 If you have children or are praying about parenting, I can’t recommend this book enough。

gets better and better as it goes on。 first several chapters feel pretty dry — some legit gold towards the end。 especially helpful talking through all of the various types of communication that parents have with their kids — and great thoughts on how to interact with children who are unbelievers。

I read this for work :)

Great biblical teaching on shepherding a child’s heart looking at infancy, childhood, and the teenage years。I was most challenged by thinking through evaluating and setting goals for your parenting/children。 Lots of skills/principles which correlate to other discipling relations too。 Recommended。

This book was super biblical and super helpful; a great look at parenting from a theological perspective and how the gospel becomes relevant to your children as they grow and are discipled (or shepherded)。

I highly recommend this book to any parent。 Probably the best parent book I’ve ever read。 It seeks to align with God’s order and plan for parenthood and Tedd Tripp does an excellent job explaining, encouraging, and confronting you to be in align with God’s word as a parent。

I'd give this less than a one if I could。 I detest "discipline" that seems to be more abuse than discipline。 Google this author and his teaching before reading。 I destroyed my book so that it wouldn't fall into anyone else's hands。 I'd give this less than a one if I could。 I detest "discipline" that seems to be more abuse than discipline。 Google this author and his teaching before reading。 I destroyed my book so that it wouldn't fall into anyone else's hands。 。。。more

Some good points but wouldn't recommend it overall。 Tedd Tripp seems a bit too stuck in the Old Testament with too little emphasis on grace and the gospel - which should be the epicenter of our lives/parenting as Christians。 Some good points but wouldn't recommend it overall。 Tedd Tripp seems a bit too stuck in the Old Testament with too little emphasis on grace and the gospel - which should be the epicenter of our lives/parenting as Christians。 。。。more

By far, the best parenting book I’ve read to date。

This was a good foundation of parenting。 Agreed with most of it。 Some examples were a bit dated but the principles were still true。

So clear, so logical, and so biblically sound。 I will be going back through this several times throughout my parenting journey。

We really appreciated the Tripp's focus on what the Bible teaches about parenting, mainly in Proverbs and Ephesians。 There are a lot of parenting ideas with a Christian label slapped on them, but I think Tripp really gets to the heart of what God has told us about being parents。 It is rather high-level; doesn't get into the weeds of many specific parenting scenarios, but rather gives principles for you to apply to various issues that arrive。I think my favorite part of the book was in the beginni We really appreciated the Tripp's focus on what the Bible teaches about parenting, mainly in Proverbs and Ephesians。 There are a lot of parenting ideas with a Christian label slapped on them, but I think Tripp really gets to the heart of what God has told us about being parents。 It is rather high-level; doesn't get into the weeds of many specific parenting scenarios, but rather gives principles for you to apply to various issues that arrive。I think my favorite part of the book was in the beginning when he described the first time he and his son had a conversation about God, not as a teacher and a student, but as two Christians seeking knowledge and understanding of God together。 That's is my hopeful vision for my relationship with my children someday。I give it 4/5 stars because it is rather long, and could have benefitted from being more concise。 。。。more

Mixed feelings。 It is both very insightful and infuriating at the same time。。There’s a lot that is good here。。。 I love how this book focuses on the heart of the child, not just on behavior change。 Tedd Tripp has some great points on communication with your child, going beyond warnings and scoldings, about listening to your child and learning about his/ her heart。。。However, the OVEREMPHASIS on the biblical need for “spanking” is unnecessary。 He does not provide a convincing argument or biblical b Mixed feelings。 It is both very insightful and infuriating at the same time。。There’s a lot that is good here。。。 I love how this book focuses on the heart of the child, not just on behavior change。 Tedd Tripp has some great points on communication with your child, going beyond warnings and scoldings, about listening to your child and learning about his/ her heart。。。However, the OVEREMPHASIS on the biblical need for “spanking” is unnecessary。 He does not provide a convincing argument or biblical basis for the need of constant physical punishment。 Yes, discipline is needed, & there are many biblical methods 。。。 we cannot confuse being under “the law” with being under the new law aka “in Christ。”Many children’s behaviors stem from an absence of skills or development to handle a situation appropriately。 They need to be taught and trained with grace。 。。。more

Wonderful。 Helpful and logical Christian parenting book。 Will certainly be rereading this again and again。

Still probably my first recommendation for parenting books。 It's thin on instruction for parenting teens and helping parents turn things around if they've been neglectful for an extended period of time, but I really appreciate the biblical ideal that is portrayed here。 Still probably my first recommendation for parenting books。 It's thin on instruction for parenting teens and helping parents turn things around if they've been neglectful for an extended period of time, but I really appreciate the biblical ideal that is portrayed here。 。。。more

I imagine there will be those that swear by this book as I could see it being something that people use to justify hiding their children away until they are ready to take on the world as adults。 I myself found his overall direction to be good (what his aim for the book was), but his thought process and execution were lacking。 He focuses a lot of time on "the rod"/spanking and how his views are more biblical than a lot of parenting books out there。 While I do agree that there are a lot of garbage I imagine there will be those that swear by this book as I could see it being something that people use to justify hiding their children away until they are ready to take on the world as adults。 I myself found his overall direction to be good (what his aim for the book was), but his thought process and execution were lacking。 He focuses a lot of time on "the rod"/spanking and how his views are more biblical than a lot of parenting books out there。 While I do agree that there are a lot of garbage parenting books, I don't think that there is every one way to parent。 Each child is so incredibly different that it would be impossible to have one specific way of parenting and be 100% successful with every child。The book does give you things to think about, but I just dont think there is enough substance to warrant a read。 。。。more

I greatly enjoyed reading Shepherding a Child's Heart by Tedd Tripp。 It is biblical and practical。 The main point of the book is that as a parent, your main goal is to shepherd their heart toward a God-ward orientation and lead them to the gospel。 This looks different in different stages of the child's development, and Tripp explains practically how it looks in infancy to childhood, childhood, and teenage years。Tripp says the main focus in the first stage is teaching your child that he is a pers I greatly enjoyed reading Shepherding a Child's Heart by Tedd Tripp。 It is biblical and practical。 The main point of the book is that as a parent, your main goal is to shepherd their heart toward a God-ward orientation and lead them to the gospel。 This looks different in different stages of the child's development, and Tripp explains practically how it looks in infancy to childhood, childhood, and teenage years。Tripp says the main focus in the first stage is teaching your child that he is a person created by God under authority。 In the second stage, the focus is character development。 In the third stage, the focus is the fear of the Lord, adherence to parental instruction, and disassociation from the wicked (Prov 1:7-19)。 During the last stage, your authority is less and your influence is more。 The willingness of the child to see you as an influence relates to the foundation you've built in the first two stages。I appreciated how Tripp's parenting philosophy is scripture-based and balances authority and discipline with kindness and communication。 He advocates for a combination of spanking and communication in discipline and does a great job of explaining why spanking is a legitimate form of discipline and, against popular opinion, is not cruel and abusive when done properly。 He also explains when and howto do it in a controlled manner without being abusive。 I have found myself thinking about the book often as I give my toddler warnings, remembering what Tripp says about consistency。 I also think about things I say such as, "if you want to play with yours toys, you need to do xyz first。" Tripp would say those kinds of bargains just train your child to be motivated by selfish materialism。 He needs to obey regardless of whether he gets what he wants。 I've been checking myself a lot on that。 I'm really glad I read the book now so I can think of these things in the foundational years。 This book will benefit all parents, but this will likely be most helpful for young parents who are able to implement the principles early。 Tripp never promises that all will be well if you follow the strategies of this book like a formula, but most of the examples given about his own children suggest that his children grew to desire God and wanted to do the right thing as Tripp and his wife implemented these parenting principles and strategies。 The questions I have for the author are, how would you instruct a parent in the teen years of a teen who would not see you as an influence and is making bad decisions? What about when you instruct and counsel your older child/teenager and they truly don't care and/or they don't have a relationship with God? What if you messed up in the foundational years? Perhaps those questions would be better answered with a different book。All things considered, this book is excellent in giving scriptural, foundational principles and strategies for parents, and I would definitely recommend it。 It is a book I am sure I will come back to again over the years。 。。。more
